In late March 2025, Chexy made a big splash by expanding its offerings allowing for new opportunities for sustainable earning - supporting credit card payment of personal taxes and multiple new types of payment methods for bills. Since then I've been hard at work with them to launch physician specific offerings and promotional bonuses. As we expand these services I want to go over some helpful tips for getting the widest capture of your expenses with the lowest effort, to maximize your sustainable earning.

As always you can find more Referral information and Disclaimers at the end of the article.

Signing up
Sign up via exclusive referral link will flag your account as potential Physician or Dentist (or other business owner). You'll be contacted by Chexy support to verify your eligibility (think license info), and upon doing so you'll be eligible for 15,000 AP points if you verify your account and process at least $15k in payments by September 15th (CRA installment date!). This is in addition to the currently available new account offer shown below, which you can also access via this link as a non MD.

AND this is in addition to the points you'll earn on whichever card you use, imagine if you're using this to get a big sign up bonus!
Variable Payments
While chexy is great for ongoing payments, due to technical limitations of the platform (hopefully to be addressed before long!), they only support single payments or monthly recurring payments of a fixed amount. While you can certainly edit the amount before it processes each month, this is a lot of cognitive overhead for relatively small rewards, so I think many users just ignore monthly variable bills such as utilities. But fret not, there are a couple of options to capture most if not all of these expenses to harness for additional earning. This can be particularly interesting if you're a business owner where your utilities may be particularly high (and paid by the business!), but even for more "regular people" like me it's one more source that funnels points into my travel budget. In my mind there are a few separate but related approaches to this problem.
Pay the minimum - This approach is best for someone who wants to optimize their cashflow as much as possible while still obtaining rewards
For this approach you'll want to take a bill that is already set up to be paid by Pre-authorized Debit (PAD) from your bank
First go to your bank account or utility account and review your bill amounts over a reasonable sample size. Let's say in the past year your bill has ranged from $100-$140
Next go on Chexy and add a recurring payment under utilities and use the bill pay option, finding your utility company on the list
Set your recurring bill payment 1-2wk before your PAD usually processes for the lowest end of your bill range (in this example $100)
Chexy will push a manual payment of $100 well before statement close
Utility company will bill you for $0-40 depending on the residual amount
Pay the average - this approach will capture a bit more points and smooth your cashflow somewhat (this is my preference)
Similar to above but set your Chexy bill pay to $120
On months where your bill is lower, the utility company will register a credit to carry over to the next month
Over time you may want to slightly tweak your bill pay if you notice the credit drifting up or down, but if your average is close you can largely ignore it
Pay the maximum - maximum points but more hassle, not my favourite
This option allows you to discontinue your regular PAD and capture all of the spend
Set your bill pay to $140, knowing that over time you will accumulate more and more credit
Every ~6-12mo check the credit balance with the utility, if it is sufficiently high, pause Chexy for a payment or two
Lump sum prepay - best for hitting big Sign up Bonuses or getting spend related perks before end of the year (eg. spend $25k in a year on a premium Aeroplan card for a companion pass)
Feb-24 | utility | $95.54 |
Mar-24 | utility | $119.38 |
Apr-24 | utility | $109.41 |
May-24 | utility | $26.92 |
Jun-24 | utility | $0.00 |
Jul-24 | utility | $48.69 |
Aug-24 | utility | $16.79 |
Sep-24 | utility | $18.72 |
Oct-24 | utility | $2.90 |
Nov-24 | utility | $5.09 |
Dec-24 | utility | $0.00 |
Jan-25 | utility | $3.30 |
Feb-25 | utility | $6.51 |
Mar-25 | utility | $0.00 |
Apr-25 | utility | $43.72 |
This is a modified real world example of me implementing the Pay the Average approach. You'll see some months there is no residual and others there is. If the residual is high I can consider increasing my recurring bill pay, and if the credit with the utility company is high I can consider decreasing the bill pay. For the most part I recommend setting it and forgetting it. This is not a huge spend, so it shouldn't consume a lot of your thought process, but if you can capture a couple hundred a month across your utilities, it makes it that much easier earn points behind the scenes.
Is it worth it?
You may or may not have seen my previous articles about how to maximize the value you get from a lump sum or ongoing payments through Chexy - in many cases it was already an amazingly powerful tool to harvest rewards from expenses that typically generate none. But now with the rollout of Chexy for Docs we get bonus points, a green light to use Chexy for more business expenses (office rent/overhead, cmpa, etc), and early access to potential additional opportunities.
Even without promotions and sign up bonuses, using a 1.25x card or the business gold strategy outlined in my article on paying taxes via card and given Chexy's 1.75% fee you could be obtaining points at a price of under 1.4c each. Given that the mean redemption value of an Aeroplan point is 2c, or that Avion points on a premium card can be redeemed for a guaranteed 2c for business class travel you could easily come out well ahead. If its a business expense, or there's a sign up bonus its even better. Or if you learn to be savvy with your points and redeem them for 3+ c each you'll be laughing your way into your business class pod. Remember that you can book business class for 60-80k points or ~$840-1120 in Chexy fees when you know how to maximize your redemptions, even better if those are business expense fees! Or if you're more team cashback, you can take advantage of the Scotia Momentum visa which earns 4% back on recurring expenses (which Chexy triggers), 4% back for spending 1.75% is easy math! Just note the card has a $25k annual limit on this multiplier.
Even better if they didn't already have a good card for this, they could sign up for one and get a sign up bonus on top of it all. This could add 50-200k in additional points depending. Not sure what card to pick? You can check out our card comparison tool, my favourites are the Business Platinum, Business Aeroplan Reserve, and Business Avion Visa Infinite. These cards all earn 1.25x of a highly valuable point useful for aspirational business class travel.
